Qualifcations

Qualifications

Minimum 2 years’ active field practice as a paramedic; 5 years’ active practice preferred;

Possesses all qualifications and conditions as outlined in the Ambulance Act/Ontario Reg 257/00 including, at the time of application:

+ MOH Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant (AEMCA) certificate; or eligibility for Ontario equivalency;

+ MOH Advanced Care Paramedic certificate; or eligibility for Ontario equivalency; Note: Ontario MOH Paramedic Equivalency Process can be found here;

+ Current valid F Class (or higher) Drivers License or provincial equivalent with satisfactory Driver Abstract;

+ Current valid CPR for Healthcare Professionals and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS);

+ Current, valid immunizations and confirmation of freedom from communicable disease as outlined in MOH Ambulance Service Communicable Disease Standards;

+ Satisfactory Criminal Record Search current within 90 days; 

+ Advanced Care Paramedic Program graduation certificate from a recognized institution;

+ Current Advanced Care Paramedic certification in good standing with a provincial Base Hospital or applicable regulatory body;

+ Completion of a Vulnerable Sector Screening process with a satisfactory result prior to or within 90 days of commencement of employment;

Ability to successfully:

+ Certify at the ACP level with Ornge Base Hospital;

+ Complete pre-qualification requirements for CCP course admission;

+ Provide proof of completion of Ornge Aeromedical Theory Program; 

+ MOH Aeromedical Theory Certificate; and

+ Satisfactory proof of completion, current within 6 months, of OPPAT physical fitness assessment program.

Training

Advanced Training at the Critical Care Level

Ornge's Critical Care Paramedics receive among the highest level of training in the industry. Ornge provides its paramedics with Critical Care Training — with medical simulation driven, evidence-based programs that use the latest in medical equipment, procedures and pharmacology.

With the support and guidance of the Ornge Medical Advisory Committee, our flight paramedics have immediate access to physicians with specialties ranging from anesthesia to neonatology. Ornge paramedics receive national leading continuing professional development that includes physician and paramedic led training, including just-in-time training at base, as well as regular in-hospital clinical rotations.

The Critical Care Paramedic level of care is the highest level of care in paramedicine. Ornge is the only Base Hospital in Ontario that certifies to this level of care. Additionally, Ornge is one of a handful of employers in Canada that offer training and service at the critical care level. This means we invest in you by continuing your salary while providing you your critical care training. Ornge believes in going above and beyond Transport Canada requirements in our flight training because our number one priority is the safety of our crews and the patients of Ontario.

Ornge serves more than 13 million people over one million square kilometers of land— the size of France, Spain and the Netherlands combined. The varied Ontario landscape means our paramedics have the ability to adapt quickly to changing environments. This ultimately plays a major role in helping ensure access to medical care for thousands of patients every year.

Ornge operates out of 13 front-line bases, one head office, and one warehouse (15 locations) located in 12 communities across the province. We regularly compete on the international stage in critical care simulation competitions, allowing paramedics the opportunity to represent Ornge and demonstrate our commitment to patient care.

When paramedics join our team, they are able to live in beautiful northern communities while aiding in our mission of providing the best care to our patients, whereever they may be. Our northern bases include: Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, Timmins, Moosonee, Kenora, and Sudbury.

The paramedics of Ornge are proud to be a part of a long tradition of patient care in this province. In addition to being able to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyles by participating in activitiessuch as fishing, hiking, hunting, taking on a new adventures using All Terain Vehicles, our northern base locations tend to have ample affordable housing.

In 2021, Ornge staff proudly led 'Operation Remote Immunity' a program which enabled members of 31 remote and fly-in Northern Communities to access the COVID-19 Moderna Vaccine.

Ornge maintains industry leading medical equipment including cardiac monitors, transport mechanical ventilators and infusion pumps, intra-aortic balloon pump, and video assisted laryngyscope devices.

Ornge recently underwent a standardized medical equipment bag implementation organization-wide. This process included medication and patient-safety theories, optimizing paramedic workflow and improving our commitment to system-wide error reduction. Include photo of full stocked plane or helicopter.

Ornge owns a fleet of aircraft across the province of Ontario. Vehicles in our fleet include: Pilatus Next Generation PzC-12 airplanes, Leonardo AW-139 helicopters, Crestline Commander land ambulances.

Ornge has a full time crew of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers who work daily and are available around the clock.
